Berntsson, who had placed second the last two years, swept Italian Francesco Bruni, 2-0, in the best 2-out-of-3 final match play. Hundreds of gatherers cheered the Swedish team as they crossed the finish line just within shouting distance off Belmont Pier.

Food Assistance Struggles

The worsening economy has forced more families to seek provisions and created a strain on the charities that help them, a food coordinator with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank said Wednesday.

"I notice it's more people, more families and seeing middle class people are coming in more now than what it was before," said Maurice Harper, a trustee at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. 

Harper supervises the food giveaway operation at the Richard Allen Community Center on Western Avenue across from the church in the Athens neighborhood of Los Angeles.
